The PowerPoint screen shown in Figure 13.1 displays the Standard toolbar, Formatting toolbar, and the task pane. You can display or hide toolbars through the View menu, as shown in Figure 13.2. Note the check mark beside Standard and Formatting, indicating that those toolbars are displayed. To hide any open toolbar, click the toolbar’s name.

Sanity Check If the Standard and Formatting toolbars are displayed on the same row, you can separate them into two separate rows so that more buttons are visible. Click Tools, Customize, and then click the Options tab. Click Show Standard and Formatting toolbars on two rows. Click Close to close the Customize dialog box. |
Having worked with other Windows applications, such as Excel and Word, you should be familiar with some elements of the PowerPoint window, such as the title bar, menu bar, and toolbars. However, beyond that, the interface is different from other Windows applications. Selections that are unique to PowerPoint, such as slide layout options and slide views, are part of the PowerPoint interface and are not displayed in other Windows application interfaces.
Figure 13.1 shows PowerPoint in Normal view, which is the view that you will most often use. A view is the way the PowerPoint window appears. Depending upon the task in which you are involved, you might select a different view. In Normal view, the Slide pane is the area where the current slide is displayed. It is also where you can create a slide, typing titles and including slide content. Type your presentation notes in the Notes pane, so that you can refer to them during the presentation or print them as handouts for your audience. The left pane includes two tabs Outline and Slides. The Outline tab displays the text for each slide in outline format (major headings, subheadings, and so forth), whereas the Slides tab displays thumbnails of slides (small versions).

Quick Tip If either the Notes pane or the left pane is too large or in your way when you are creating a slide, you can resize it. Click and drag the bar dividing the left pane from the Slide pane (called a splitter bar) to make the left pane smaller. Similarly, you can click and drag the splitter bar between the Notes pane and the Slide pane to resize Notes. However, if you make these panes too small, they will disappear from view, at which point you can click and drag them back into view. |

- Big Sur and Apple Silicon Support:
- Menu Bar Splitter is now fully compatible with Big Sur (including a fancy new icon!) and is compiled natively for Apple Silicon machines. No Rosetta needed where we’re going.
- Custom Icons:
- You can now add your own custom icons for your splitters. The size of the splitter will automatically adjust to accommodate whatever image you have selected, and you can add as many as you want. You can even rename your icons and set them to follow the system appearance.
- Note: This update removes the Bartender Compatibility Version. As of Bartender 4, it works as intended with the main Menu Bar Splitter app and you can independently hide and show splitters, so the BCV is not required anymore.
- Added:
- Added native Big Sur and Apple Silicon support
- Added a new app icon
- Added the ability to set your own custom icons
- Changed:
- Removed the Bartender Compatibility Version
- Fixed splitters not being in the right order on restart
- Fixed preferences sometimes not saving when quitting the app
